why must they always change (or discontinue) the good things?

i'm not the biggest fan of change, but when you change, or get rid of, foods that i happen to love, i get a little angry.

things that were delicious and now not so much:

- boston market's minute maid lemonade: it used to have real lemon pulp in it. now it tastes like crystal lite....and i HATE crystal lite.

- the soft serve at souplantation: they switched brands. it's weird and icky now so i just have granola for dessert.

- shorehouse took their macaroni and cheese off the menu! i loved that stuff. it tasted so cheap, but in a really delicious way...you know what i mean?

- progresso's canned vegetable soup: the broth used to be tangy and vibrant. it's bland and tastes a bit like can now.

- i know this was like a hundred years ago, but i'm still a little bit hung up and subway switching their bread recipes and cutting their bread the WRONG way.

- there are only like 3 peanuts in a bag of cracker jack now. it seems like there used to be more. (speaking of - why is it in a bag now?)

- quaker stopped making their strawberry rice cakes

- you can't get cheddar flavored saltines anywhere anymore

- ruby red squirt! whyyyy would they get rid of that?

- what on EARTH happened to cheez balls? you know the delicious snacks that came in a blue can?

well, at least mcdonald's switched back to their white meat chicken nuggets a few years ago. that makes up for some of this.

kinda.

wow. i love some really bad foods.

do you have any favorites that are no longer with us due to change or discontinuation?

can you help me find cheez balls?

thanks.

  2. When I was little we used to live with my grandparents ( they lived upstairs in the farm house) and every night I would go upstairs and my grandpa would unlock his little nightstand ( jelly cupboard) and he always had a big blue canister of cheese balls and he's give me 2 or 3. Ahh such sweet memories. I hadn't thought of that for a long time until you mentioned the blue canister.

  4. Well. My biggest gripe is the chips called O'Boise chips. They were bubbly, and crisp and delicious.

And apparently contained a chemical ingredient that the FDA thought was bad for us. FDA: Back up off my bidness.

  5. does a neighborhood count? i was raised in downtown fullerton, and now it is full of drunks and 909'ers who trash the once was an amazing neighborhood. that is a huge change from crystal lite, but it's the first thing that came to mind.

  6. I have no advice on the cheese balls, but I also REALLY hate it when something I love changes. It'll ruin your day for sure!

  7. Dunk-a-Roos!!!

  8. Kix stopped making the berry version. And I hate that my grocery store doesn't carry Kashi's Honey Sunshine. I have to make a special trip somewhere else for it. Also, I hated it when Cheetos changed their packaging. I felt like it tainted the taste of the Cheetos. I was probably only 12 or 13 when it happened and I called the 1-800 number on the back of the package to complain.

Oh! And Abita Strawberry beer is early summer only and I'm craving it like mad crazy right now.

  9. I had to take a full minute to stop laughing before writing this comment.

    Okay. Done...breathing normally now...

Trader Joe's discontinues tons of stuff that I love, but most recently it was the Tempting Trail mix. Best trail mix ever...and now it's gone.

chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, peanuts, almonds, cashews, dried raspberries. PERFECT.

RIP, Tempting Trail Mix...you are missed.

  10. Amen to the Subway statement! I worked there in the mid 90s my sophmore & junior years of h.s.. You know how when you work at a restaurant for awhile, you get sick of the food and don't eat there for a very long time even after switching jobs? Well, it had been 5 years or so before I went back for a meatball sub. As a trained Subway Artist, I was appalled when I saw the young girl cut it straight down the side. I asked her when they started doing it that way, and she looked at me like I was an idiot. She might as well have said, "uh lady, your age is showing."

Cheez balls, yes, PLEASE bring them back!!! And what happened to Gold-N-Cheese? I remember calling them stop signs.

  11. I completely agree about the ice cream at the Soup Plantation! That stuff can barely be called ice cream!

  12. Ahah! NC has gotten Dunk-a-Roos back. My little ladies love them. :)

  13. AGREED.
There used to be this snack bar down the street from where I used to live, and they used to sell these /amazing/ slushies.
But then they "upgraded" the snack bar into a "dining hall" and decided that they were too shmancy for slushies and they GOT RID OF THE SLUSHIE MACHINE.
    I'm still reeling over that.

Oh and they don't sell Dr. Pepper in our local commissary anymore.

    Change sucks.

  14. k.. not the kind that come in the blue can, but at COSTCO you can get a HUUUUUGE plastic bucket of cheese balls.

  15. Oh my goodness! How funny you blog of this today! I was just telling friends how I LOVED ravioli formaggi at Maccaroni Grill, and they cut it years ago. I'm still bitter. When you cut my signature go to dish, things will never be the same. My relationship with Mac. Grill has changed since then. And not for the better.

  16. I didn't even know I missed Granny Goose potato chips, until I saw them at the store the other day and realized I hadn't eaten them in 15 years. Apparently, they're back, which is the kind of change I can get behind. The sour cream and green onion is the best!

  17. There's a cheez balls petition going on...

    http://www.petitiononline.com/cheez123/

cheez balls remind me of the beach. :) My mom used to take us to 59th street on the Peninsula (Belmont Shore) EVERY day. She wouldn't let us reach into the canister with our sandy hands, but would pop them into our mouths like little birdies. Grapes and tuna sandwiches were our other beach foods. AND CACTUS COOLER!

  18. I miss Oboisies so much! They were amazing. Also Totino's (I think) Cheese Bites. Sigh. I have dreams about those things.

  19. I have to say I love your blog. I've been following it for a while and finally decided I should post! Maybe this particular post just went straight to the heart because I am missing a very large food staple since Kelloggs stopped making my favorite cereal...fruit-filled mini-wheats! Does anyone remember those? They were so good - crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside.

    ReplyDelete
  20. does anyone remember the variety of chex cereal with the graham cracker in it????? i miss it almost every morning. same goes for yummy, almost creamy jello popsicles they made when we were kids. what the heck.

  21. i work at subway when im not at school...

i still have people come in asking us to cut the bread the "old" way or make sandwiches that are no longer on the menu. and even though we aren't suppose to, i do it anyways.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm not a huge fan of TGIFridays, but they used to have 'Fridays Chicken Sandwich' and it was DELICIOUS. Now? Gone. Now? I dont eat there. :P

  23. I am pretty sure that Target sells the Planters cheese balls you are talking about. They are basically the only ones that still sell them.

This local ice cream company called Umpqua used to sell ice milk push-ups which they no longer do. We used to get them through the Schwann's man when I was little but they don't sell them anymore....anywhere. Boo.

  24. You are too funny. What an adorable post. I just miss all the foods from back home. It feels like they are discontinued because I can't get them here. xoxo

  25. haha.. yay for James still cutting the bread at Subway the old way (only when asked, of course)!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ditto on the new progresso soup can taste. It is depressing indeed.

  27. Oh My Dear, I thought I was the only one that still becomes rather irritated each time they cut my sandwich at Subway. I still occasionally ask for them to cut it the "old" way (with fingers crossed that they'll know what I mean)... I'm usually met with a raised eyebrow and a stare.

Maybe I'll start requesting to cut my own sandwich...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh yes, yes... Berry Kixs! Where did they go? If found please return to the shelves of my local grocer!

    ReplyDelete
  29. cheese curls! can't find them anywhere anymore. and not just food, even products such as shampoo and lotions and stuff...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Nothing has changed in the regular tail mix, but as I was eating it, I wished they just had the m & m's and raisins.

    Xo,
    Sarah Ann

  31. OMG CHEEZ BALLS!! I remember those awesome giant blue containers now!!

They've stopped making my favorite Gatorade flavor (lemon ice) and my favorite Pop Tart flavor (yogurt burst).

And, I hate crystal lite too! When I first saw the ad, I thought it was for a type of wine cooler and it looked tasty! but then I found out it was flavored water, which I hate with a passion.

    Thanks for this great post!

  32. some of my guy friends have a ginourmous plastic container of cheezballs! if i had a big ol boat i'd ship you a ton of them!! :) did you ever drink clearly canadians? man i loved those and i cant find them anywhere now!

  34. Is it really bad that i LOVED the old greyish maccas nuggest?

A lot lot lot more then the current ones?

  35. since its summer: i've been craving the huge licorice ropes they used to sell at the pool. i can't find them ANYWHERE!!! i would sure love to find some though....

  36. I cannot believe there is someone else who loves, well now loved :( , cheezballs as much as I did!
I always tell my husband when I eat crackerjacks that they should just come out with bags of their peanuts. It would be heaven.
Get out of my head, lady!! :)

  37. What a funny post. You don't know what you've got till its gone. I am positive that about 10 (maybe 15) years ago they changed the recipe for the sauce in taco bell bean burritos. It used to be so yummy-now it tastes strange.
Meredith- we still have the fruit filled mini wheats in Australia! And I agree Subways bread used to taste so much nicer!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Uhh.. you forgot the best one! The Kangaroo cookies you dip in sprinkled vanilla frosting! Honestly, Jasi. Oh, and the Koala bear treats too.

    ReplyDelete
  39. my dad used to get cracker jacks in the box and i loved it. somehow in the bag, they just don't taste that good.

ok, i have to ask, how did subway used to cut the bread???? i want to know! i only started eating subway back in high school 2 years ago when everyone on the water polo team dragged me there. i'm very curious!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I know what you mean, I used to love some foods that unfortunatly here it's impossible to find or they don't sell them anymore , like Rolo candies (unavailable here) cadbury chocolate and bagels!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I don't know why Ben & Jerry's stopped making berry kaboom icecream. It was rasberry and blueberry icecream with white-chocolate covered pop rocks. Yummy!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Jello Gelatin Pops. I even emailed Kraft to find out what happened to them, apparently people didn't love them. :( So sad, I happened to think they were incredible.

Also, I don't knjow used to be fruit snacks that were in the shape of little pellets. They were my favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm with you on everything except the ruby red squirt. What exactly is that?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ruby red squirt's sudden and unexplained disappearance makes me very, very sad as well.

And thank you for mentioning Subway! I thought I was CRAZY when I said something about how the bread used to be cut and people just looked at me like I was growing extra heads! Now I know I'm NOT crazy. At least...not about that.

    ReplyDelete
  45. i feel you on the subway thing...

    chili's changed their ranch

jack in the box took away their choc malted milkshake

that is all that i can think of now, but i know there is more

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm all about going back to white meat chicken nuggets...even though I ate them regardless :(
AND THEY GOT RID OF RUBY RED SQUIRT???????!!!!!
Also, even though I McDonalds fries are far superior, Burger King's new (kinda) fries taste like something Fisher Price would make.

    ReplyDelete
  47. the pink and white animal cracker cookies. and five alive, did you ever drink that--it was soooo good.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hey Jas, can't you find Cheese Balls at CVS? I could have sworn I've bought 'em from there before. I'm probably totally off the mark but check it out next time, yeah?

    ReplyDelete
  49. i'm so sad about planter cheese balls, every now and then I find them in the snack section, but i read they discontinued them. loccitane discontinued my favorite honey bubble bath...it smelled like the perfume that would come with barbies.
