1994 was a very good year

over the weekend, levi and i were talking about music we liked in junior high.

we came up with a list of classics including boyz II men, all 4 one, coolio, lisa loeb, ace of base, jon secada, janet jackson, crash test dummies, salt n pepa, etc. we were on a roll.

so when we got home, we started looking up all this amazing music, and we discovered that 98% of the songs were from the billboard top 100 in 1994.

during the school year of 1993/1994, i was 11 and in the sixth grade. levi was 13 and in the seventh grade. 1994 was the year we came into musical awareness...you know the time when you start listening to music that you want to listen to, that isn't the lion king or pocahontas soundtrack. i love that we were in different states and we had never met each other, but this still happened for us at the same time with the same music.

i'm so lucky to have been a pre-teen/teenager during the 90s. you youngsters out there really missed out. the 90s were so original. they make me want to put on a slip dress, some combat boots, some mac spice lipliner, some clinique black honey semi-lipstick, and a spritz of sunflowers perfume...oh wait, that look has already come back. weird!

here's a little playlist i made of some 1994 classics. it's a little long, but i left sooooo much out. warning: salt n pepa can get a little raunchy, and warren g is pretty gangsta.

when did you come into "musical awareness?" who were some of your favorite musical artists and bands?

  4. I completely agree with you! The 90's hold a special place in my heart. But I came into musical awareness, as you put it, more in the 80's which is strange since I was so young. I watched MTV all day when I was a kid back when MTV was solely about the music. The difference with the 80's and the 90's however are the memories and emotions attached to the 90's songs since that was when I was old enough to make those connections. Some of my favorites were The Counting Crows, The Cranberries, Sheryl Crow, but also a lot of the grunge. I was an angry teen so I liked it! lol. It is always fun reminiscing, that is why I have a 90's and 80's playlist on my iPod.

  7. I love this! The 90's were awesome! I was in elementary and junior high in the 90's and I love all the music! I especially remember getting one of my first tapes which was TLC, crazy, sexy, cool!! I also liked the Presidents of the United States of America, Green Day, Bush, Ace of Base, and tons more that I can't even think of...But I'm sure it will come to me later.

  8. I'm not going to lie... Lisa Loeb sounds more than a little dirty. I was also around 11 when I remember really getting into music - for me it was a mix of old stuff like the Beatles, and some really dumb stuff that will never EVER be considered cool, even if I make a playlist in a million years - the Spice Girls, Boyzone... around 1997 I guess!

  9. Oh I love that you posted your playlist! I have satellite radio in my car and always am listening to the best of the 90's channel. I loved 90's music! No Doubt was my first musical awareness group. I played her CD over and over and over. Good times.

  17. this is so great! i remember all these songs so well. i was 9 and in the fourth grade in 1994 but this definitely the year that music became important to me beyond oldies. it's also the year weezer debuted their blue album which is and always will be my all time favorite band if for no other reason than the emotional, sentimental attachment. thanks for the blast from the past!

  18. in 1994 i was 12 and thought i was cooler than i was every time i turned on mtv.

  19. I was 13 in 1993 and I totally remember all of those bands. When I was in 6th grade, I asked for the MTV Unplugged CD of 10,000 Maniacs - why, I don't know. I also LOVED The Cranberries.

I would say my REAL musical awareness came when I was a sophomore in high school - 1996 was an awesome year for bands like Oasis, Smashing Pumpkins, Bush, etc.

    Great post:)

  21. Mine was the same year! and I loved all those songs you wrote about, but the musical influence that I discovered that year that had the most lasting impact on my life was definitely green day!

  23. I was 11 when I first started listening to music--I memorized the Beatles "I Wanna hold your hand" from listening to it play on the radio.

  24. Oh my this was nice blast from the past! I was 13yrs old in 1994 and it was probably around this time that music took on whole new demention for me. Of course, this might be the case for most people as junior high is typically a defining time for most people, it's when we begin to find our "identity". I too, remember all these songs and can even sing the lyrics still...wow what a dork I am. So much fun, thanks for the memories!

  25. Aw, I loved the 90s and really do miss it! Today's music doesn't even compare to the 90s music... I seriously have at least a few songs by all of the artists you listed on my Mp3 player. LOVE IT! I remember the very first group I got into on my own was Ace of Base. I loved them ridiculously and had The Sign, All That She Wants and Don't Turn Around on repeat for at least 3 months. Good stuff.

  26. "musical awareness" came to me in the 7th grade as well. circa 1991. I remember feeling an excitement never before felt as I watched that yellow-washed video set in a dingy school gym.

  27. yeah, i love me some classic 90s hits. acctually, i cannot listen to ace of base anymore... but yeah, some day i'll be able to go back to that.

  28. i played this all day yesterday! you have no idea about my soft spot for the 90s. when "regulators" came on, i literally leaped to me feet and began rapping the entire song.

  29. Wow, this brings back memories! I was in the same grade as Levi. The music reminds me of the dance parties we used to have, slow dancing to boys II men.
